PSYCHOSOCIAL COUNSELING Christian Education DEPARTMENT OF THEOLOGY Guidance & Counseling PASTORAL CARE COUNSELING PSYCHOSOCIAL COUNSELING COURSE DESCRIPTIONS - PSYCHOSOCIAL COUNSELING (CPSY) COUS 222/CPSY 201 CONTEMPORARY SOCIETAL ISSUES 3 Credit hours This course introduces and critically examines various contemporary social issues such as poverty, unemployment, energy, pollution, sexual deviance, corruption, information management, intergroup conflict, population changes, juvenile delinquency, drugs, crime, etc. it also covers the causes, interactions, policy and possible solutions. COUS 412/CPSY 202 Counseling the Aging and Persons with Disabilities 3 Credit hours This course will address the psychosocial and physical needs of aging and persons with disabilities focusing on acceptance of one’s situation or condition and one’s empowerment for livelihoods. This will be accomplished by integrating counseling skills in preparation for students to professionally help the ageing and persons with disabilities recognize and select options and opportunities for growth and advancement. COUS 331/CPSY 301 DRUGS AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE COUNSELING : ADDICTIONS, ASSESSMENTS, & INTERVENTION 3 Credit hours This course will expose students to a study of variety of substances and how they affect the physical, mental, psychological, sociological and philosophical disposition of the human being. It will also explore the root causes and some effects relating to the use and abuse of drugs, alcohols, and substances. Student will engage in field studies within specified communities with the aim of finding professional help for victims of drugs, alcohols and substances abuse by utilizing both secular and spiritual approaches appropriate for counseling persons experiencing drugs and substance abuse. Emphasis will be placed on addiction, assessments and intervention. COUS 343/CPSY 302 Rape and Sexual Abuse Counseling 3 Credit hours This is a crisis counseling course which will apply psychosocial counseling case management and referrals and legal aid to survivors and address issues of livelihoods and survivor’s mission. Student’s assessment and analysis of Gender based violence cases in Liberia will be highlighted. COUS 222/CPSY 303 Recovery: The Church & Development In Liberia (Then & Now) 3 Credit hours This course will assess the role of the church in the birth, growth and development of Liberia from the founding to present. It also includes the role the church played in conflict management and transformation, relief, repatriation, and rehabilitation of war affected persons in Liberia. Students will assess the Liberian Civil Crises and the process of recovery. Narratives of events that affected lives and properties will be discussed through role plays and cases and the approaches to recovery will be examined and highlighted. Students will participate in research and presentation activities for better comprehension of the course. COUS 330 /CPSY 305 COGNITIVE BEHAVIOR THERAPY 3 Credit hours This course will focus on the cognitive-behavioral treatment of depression and bi-polar disorder. The course will begin with a review of the nature and diagnostic of these conditions. The course will also focus on the techniques and behavioral activation and cognitive restructuring. Several case examples will be utilized and students will engage in role-play and detailed class discussion focused on these techniques. The course will additionally include strategies for enhancing adherence to behavioral homework assignment. COUS 403/CPSY 403 Treatment Procedures & Recovery in Mental Health Counseling 3 Credit hours This course provides best practices in mental health recovery and seeks to understand the recovery process. Students will engage in research activities and presentation in class. Case studies and field discussions will be encouraged as relevant topics will to be propounded.
