MISSION: The College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences provides excellent student and community centered for an undergraduate education in an urban context; and also seeks to integrate the intellectual, spiritual, ethical and social development of its students at the AME University. Learning is a lifelong process. Education in the College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences provides the means of discovering and using knowledge to elevate the standards of human existence today and in the future. Such study liberates the individual to become a more effective citizen. The College offers a well-rounded liberal education program which enhances students’ ability to lead satisfying personal lives. It prepares students for a wide range of professional careers, and provides the academic background necessary for graduate work and or for elementary or secondary teaching. The College defines liberal education in three major components: The College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences presently has five (5) degree granting departments: English, Mass Communication, Political Science, Sociology, and Social Work. Each department is headed by a chairperson who reports directly to the Dean of the College. VISION: The College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences will be recognized as a premier college at the AME University, distinguished by its graduates who lead and serve in the general Liberian society. As a feeding arm of the AME University, it is ardently desirous to be a serious premise, inclusive teaching College whose enrollment continues to grow annually. Additionally, the College envisages more programs such as: Liberian Study Program (BA) Women Studies/ Gender Studies (BA) French Studies (BA) GOALS: The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences provides the intellectual focus around which the academic life of the University revolves. Therefore, in order to achieve the College’s mission, the aim is to: PROGRAM PROGRESS: Each department is mandated to upgrade its program to reflect present day realities. The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences provides the intellectual undergirding of all disciplines. It seeks to provide students with learning experiences beyond Liberia’s borders. We are preparing students to become leaders at the local, national, and international levels and helping them to meet the challenges created by the global community in which knowledge of other nations and their customs and traditions will no longer be just desirable but imperative. Students are encouraged to conceptualize and to use abstract thought in order to enhance general understanding. Thought given to program development is that Liberal Arts education should benefit society by enhancing each individual’s capacity to make informed and responsible choices. Individuals educated in this manner should develop behaviors that enhance the quality of life of those around them. STATEMENT OF ASSESMENT AND STUDENT LEARNING: Students are expected to participate in an on-going assessment program. The assessment program provides data to determine teacher effectiveness and to make data-driven decisions. DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH AND LITERATURE Mission: The Department of English recognizes its responsibility in helping all students at AMEU to write clearly and appropriately. It seeks to interest students, especially those majoring in English, learning about the best writers of the world and their culture through discussion, presentation, and projects. Vision: The Department of English will continue to produce English majors who are diverse, proficient in oral and written language, knowledgeable about major literary works and principles, and are known for their leadership, respect for diversity and academic competence. Further, our graduates will work in, interact with, and have respect for the global marketplace and will know and use at least one foreign language. Goals: The Department of English offers a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in English. We also provide two (2) years of English to all students at the undergraduate level as part of their general education requirement. Since language is the medium of instruction the department, we remain determine to ensure that all students are given requisite communication skills and Linguistic competence necessary to perform in their work places and to live their post university lives with pride and dignity. The goals and objectives of the department are fully consistent with the published Vision and Mission of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences which are in support of these strives to: Streamline the English Language Program to enable students to sharpen their communication skills. Provide cogent and systematic instruction in both oral and written communication as found in our course descriptions. Provide stimulating and rewarding classroom teaching and learning experiences for students. Recognizing that instruction plays a crucial role in the academic life of our students, the department strives to keep class size manageable to ensure quality instruction. Enable students to have sufficient time to discuss their academic concerns as it relates to grammar and writing. Provide accurate and timely academic advertisement to motivate students to major in English by unveiling the varied advantages and benefits. Ensure that English majors successfully complete the department’s curriculum within the prescribed period of time. Frequently assess whether the department goals are being met. To facilitate this assessment strategy, the department welcomes and pays close attention to suggestions and criticisms from advisory boards, language experts, alumni, faculty members, as well as from students. Specific Objectives are: To teach the student to write informative and imaginative prose through reading, discussion, and practice. To present the best that has been thought and said in the world and develop the students’ power of appreciation and criticism through the study of literature. To enable the students to describe and explain the historical development of the English language and its present structures.
